Big Cat Rescue: The Big White (Tiger) Lie

Subject: The Big White Tiger Lie
Source: USDA Acquisition Records, Former Volunteer

Carole Lewis Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue, Tampa Florida, is against the breeding of white tigers, a favorite of zoos across the country.

On her website we learn that her only white tiger, Zabu was rescued along with her lion friend Cameron on May 3, 2004.

Baskin states that, "BCR has never taken in a white tiger before (Zabu) because we did not want to enable people to dispose of their defective cats and cause so much suffering and abuse by having an easy dumping ground for the cats that didn't serve them."

USDA acquisition papers show that Carole Lewis Baskin bought a female white Siberian tiger named Electra/Kita on November 22, 1995 from Lawrence D Jeffreys of Rt 1, Box 217 High Springs, Florida 32643 who's number at that time was (904) 454-1233. It looks like Mr. Jeffreys may have run a place known as Alligator Town and had USDA permit  #58-C-552.

We're told by former volunteers that Baskin kept this tiger hidden at her home. Some claim she had plans of trying to breed her to a lion, but no one knows what became of her, as she is not at Big Cat Rescue.

Carole Lewis Baskin, why the big white lie? What became of the white female tiger you bought from Lawrence Jeffreys in 1995?
